5 Months at the Zoo

Happy 5 months to Emmalyn & Harper!

Slowly, yet surely, my girls are becoming happier babies. Thank goodness! I can lie them on their play-mats or place them in their chairs and they are usually pretty content for a little bit. That means, I have some time to do something....whether it's to start a load of laundry or empty the dishwasher.

At their 4 month appointment a little while ago, they girls weighed 12 lbs each and were about 24 inches long. So, mommy and daddy are super proud of how they are growing! I can tell when I'm putting their 3 month sized clothes on, that sometimes it can be tricky to put over their heads. So I guess their heads are getting bigger, too! =)

Since my last post, Harper and I have had our first adventure. I was so nervous to fly with an infant, let alone my infants. They are historically pretty fussy and particular about certain things. I was so sad to have to leave Emmalyn though. Everyone asked me how I chose which twin to bring home with me and honestly there was only one reason why I picked Harper! She is a better nurser under a nursing cover. Emmy tends to fight it, but I am not one to whip out a boob in public. I do try to remain modest :) That's the only reason why I picked Harper. It wasn't an easy choice, though. I had to leave my little baby for a few days and it was incredibly hard! Going to work for a few hours is one thing...but completely leaving her for days?? Ugh. Although, during those days, I was able to see what it was like to have just 1 baby. That was quite an experience. I got the most sleep I've had in over 4 months! Life was a little more simple...that's for sure! But I wouldn't trade my Twin Mom status for anything...even if it was a little easier!

During our trip, poor Harper had a bit of a difficult time. She was on sensory overload and it was really hard for her to not be with me. Even for me, it could be difficult to get her to sleep or calm down. She didn't seem to want to be held by anyone by me that first and last day. I think it had something to do with all the people she saw from the airport, etc, that the second someone else held her and she couldn't see me, she screamed and cried and was pretty difficult to console. It broke my heart! It will take a little time for the girls to acclimate to being in Kentucky with lots of people around who want to meet them. After seeing how Harper handled everything, we might have to give the girls small doses of introductions and letting people hold them until they know people a little better. I know how excited everyone is to meet the girls!! Lots of people are constantly telling me they can't wait until we move home for that reason. I am excited for them to meet everyone, too! All I ask is for people to be a little patient. We are moving home for good, so there is plenty of time for them to meet everyone! Family is the first on the list, of course. We'll probably end up having several little "get togethers' for various people that way Kyle and I aren't driving all over the place. If there is a big group of people around, Kyle and I might need to primarily hold them..just for a while until they are older and know you. Nothing personal!! We are just trying to do what's best for the girls :)

Here are some things that have been developing for the girls:
  • They are holding onto items much better and reaching for things.
  • They use their legs a lot more! They kick like crazy. Used to be that they kicked primarily for gas reasons, but now they kick when they're frustrated, mad, super happy, playing, in the tub, etc. Harper kicks her legs ALOT and I can no longer leave her in swings (unfastened) while she's crying because she'll kick herself right out of them! She also uses her legs while lying on her back, and will end up doing a 360 and turn all the way around.
  • They love to put pressure on their legs and try to stand.

  • They have both also found their feet!! Emmalyn was the first to find hers, and then followed by Harper about 2 weeks later. Pretty sure I found more excitement from it then anyone else. =P
  • Harper has still only rolled from front to back about 8 times. Kyle was finally able to witness it the other day. Emmalyn seems to have no interest in doing this whatsoever.
  • Emmalyn is starting to roll over onto her side from her back. I think she'll probably be able to move from back to front in a few weeks.
  • They put everything in their mouth. Everything.
  • They can fit into size 2 diapers!
  • Some of their 0-3 months clothes are getting too short. AH! But, they do still fit in them pretty well.
  • We've been giving them infant probiotics. They used to have a ton of gas issues but now they have been doing so well! Rarely do they cry out in pain from gas which is nice!! I no longer have to worry about what I have to eat because it's upsetting their bellies.
  • Both girls, specifically Emmalyn, have developed this whine. It isn't a cry. They don't even open their mouths but she will do it nonstop. Though I laugh now thinking about it, while she does it, it can be really obnoxious.
We have just a little bit longer... 8 days to be specific... until we are back on Kentucky soil. Wow, what a ride it has been. It will be a little bitter sweet to leave California behind. After all, it is the only life Kyle and I have ever known together as a couple. Prior to me moving out here, I'd only seen Kyle collectively about 30 days during our relationship since he was always gone doing military stuff. Moving back will be a challenge in many ways but we are ready for it. Since we only have a little bit of time left our here, we are trying to treat the past week or so like a vacation! We've gone to the pier, gone out to eat a few more times and even took the girls to the zoo today!

God has blessed us with so much the past few years! He continues to bless us, too, with every new endeavor! I can't wait to see everyone back home. I know Kyle is excited, too.

Much love.
